The Kingdom of Kongo, was established along the lower Congo River near the coast of West Africa and in contact with Portugal from the time that the explorer, Diogo Co, reached the mouth of the Congo River in 1482. At the same time, Europeans began importing many kidnapped slaves from the West Coast of Africa. The largest group, chiefly consisting of several thousand ancient and medieval objects, was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1917. Her father was the first black graduate of Harvard.
